About the Foundation

Peter James Newman had a deep interest in the philosophy, culture and spirituality of Indigenous cultures, developed though his travels around Australia, from his family, and from friends from Central and South America.

Pete’s grandmother Mrs. Betty Owens, shared his commitment to social causes and the environment. Pete wanted the inheritance he received from her to be used in support of the Indigenous communities with whom he felt such an important connection.

In 1993, Pete died from suicide at the age of 22 after a long battle with mental illness. To honour Pete’s memory and his family’s commitment and passion to supporting Indigenous communities, The Peter Newman Foundation (PNF) was established by his brother Chris and sister Pam.

Since 1997, the Foundation has used the annual income from investments, together with donations received, to fund organisations that promote the sustainability, development and enrichment of Indigenous communities and cultures.

The Foundation seeks to build long-term partnerships and fund programs and projects that empower Indigenous communities through:

  • Education, employment and enterprise development; and

  • Arts, culture, and community strengthening.
